What can a Dalmatian eat?
Food free of animal products, vegetarian food, is preferred for a Dalmatian. A Dalmatian has a chance of urate crystals in the urine and can therefore best eat food without animal proteins. We therefore recommend Denakdog Hypo-Sensitive . This is a complete food especially for the Dalmatian. Denkadog Hypo-Sensitive is also suitable for dogs with a sensitive stomach and intestinal system. This food relieves stomach and intestinal problems.
Due to this genetic predisposition in the Dalmatian, the breakdown process of proteins (uricase) in the body (liver and kidneys) does not work perfectly. As a result, there is often too much breakdown substance urate in the urine. Urates are salts of uric acid. If there are too high concentrations of uric acid in kidney dysfunction, crystal formation can occur.
Dalmatian feeding advice
There are a number of foods that influence the formation of urate crystals. These are products that come from animals such as beef, lamb, pork and fish. The advice is to avoid food that contains these substances. A vegetarian diet is therefore good for a Dalmatian.
Dalmatian genetic predisposition
The Dalmatian is not only distinguished from other dog breeds by its appearance. A genetic predisposition to easily form stones in the bladder is more common in Dalmatians than in other dogs. If the urine becomes saturated with urate, stones will form. These stones can cause problems when urinating. The morning urine is often white in color. The crystals that form are called urate crystals.
Not all Dalmatians have problems with this. This depends on several factors. The absorption of purine from food, from which urate is made, varies per dog. The amount of purine (part of protein) does depend on the type of food. Not every Dalmatian gets the same amount of purine. And the amount of urine also determines whether urate crystals can form. If a lot of urine is produced, the urate will clump together less quickly into a crystal or stone. If there is a lot of urine present, the crystals can simply be urinated out by dilution. Frequent dog walks can also contribute.
The acidity (pH value) of the urine is an indicator of possible problems. Urine becomes more acidic through the use of certain foods. It is not the protein content of the food that is important, but the amount of purine that the protein in the food contains. The purine content is not stated on the packaging of dog food.
